I wish I could dance on the edge of a precipice
Drop all my fears and regrets off the edge
But in my heart I know I’m not really meant for this
Too afraid to take a step towards that ledge
Instead, I dredge up all the reasons to hide away
Excuses to run away from it all
But in my heart I know the leap is the only way
In order to fly, you first need to fall

A husband
A mother
Someone with a weak heart
Cogs in a machine no longer required
Cast into hell in their hour of need
Because of a CEO’s greed
and what his shareholders desired
But don’t worry
We’re a family
Don’t we all remember fondly the time
We took grandma out back and shot her in the head?
Or gave her a pittance and left her for dead? Because a family only cares if you are useful to them,
Otherwise you should be retired.
Left to be mired in the mud as your so called corporate “family”
Crushes you under their boot heels
Without a second glance.
“That sucks for them.”
“At least it’s not me.”
Tomorrow it could be.

You and I are:
Peanut butter and a cheese burger,
Strawberries and pizza,
Whiskey and grape juice,
Pop music and death metal.
Two things which seem wrong together.
But, for a few select people,
We are perfectly matched.

Discipline is my greatest challenge,
And my greatest goal
For it can build an iron clad soul.
Discipline is the way to be strong
Moving down the road
Discipline will help lighten the load
Discipline is the way to be free
In all that you do
But to be free, it all starts with you

America is now a salad bar
Not a melting pot
You pick the pieces you want
And get rid of all the rest
Don’t like the lamb?
Throw it out
Don’t like cilantro?
Throw it out
Don’t like the chickpeas?
Throw it out.
But that’s not what I want America to be about.
You can’t get Tex Mex or pizza from the salad bar
You have to combine ingredients at the start
And you don’t get anything worth eating
If you keep all the good stuff apart
So throw away the sneeze guard
And throw it all in the pot
You won’t know what you’ll get out
But some of it will be good, right?

The president shouldn’t be our king,
He’s a civil servant
But we’re obsessed with making them into
Something they can’t be.
Not just better than you and me
But perfect, a godling.
They have to be the man or woman of our dreams
Beams of light coming down
Angelic choruses sing
Trumpets thundering
Leaving us all wondering
Blinding us with amazement
A panacea embodiment
But whether a cad or a grand crusader
A grand persuader, or a humble worker
They can reach for greatness, but never perfection
And we shouldn’t expect them to.

I can be a little grandiloquent
Mostly ’cause I tend to use words like grandiloquent
When it would have been more elegant
To say someone is being narcissistic, egotistic,
or a jerk
It unrealistic of me to think a big vocabulary
Would work in conversation
It only seems to cause frustration
My lack of tact makes me implacable
Restraining my verbosity seems intractable
So my adjectives will be exculpative
My verbs vindictive
And my nouns indicative
Of a man who reads the dictionary too much.

Narcissism is a hell
You don’t even know you’re in
You don’t notice all you lose
You only see when you win
You aren’t able to grow
Life unable to flower
The only things you can know
Are perfect in your tower
You are cursed to see it fall
Screaming your rage at the sky
Not seeing the world at all
Just yourself, until you die.

Are there issues in life that you need to push through?
Is there something you want to do?
Get after it!
Are you tired of fighting to get through the day?
Of obstacles put in your way?
Get after it!
Do you keep looking for the right moment to start?
You carry a dream in your heart?
Get after it!
Sick and tired of looking for your reason why?
Is there something you want to try?
Get after it!
You don’t want to spend your whole life wondering how;
The answer is start moving now!
Get after it!

We are born as uncertainties
With futures we can’t know
They’re full of possibilities
Of many ways to go
As the years keep moving forward
Our path may not be clear
If we don’t choose one to move toward
The best will disappear
So make your choice, and make it well
For when you must ascend
Good or bad, there’s no way to tell
Until you reach the end
