Melting Pot (National Poetry Writing Month 2019 #29)   Leave a comment

America is now a salad bar
Not a melting pot
You pick the pieces you want
And get rid of all the rest

Don’t like the lamb?
Throw it out
Don’t like cilantro?
Throw it out
Don’t like the chickpeas?
Throw it out.
But that’s not what I want America to be about.

You can’t get Tex Mex or pizza from the salad bar
You have to combine ingredients at the start
And you don’t get anything worth eating
If you keep all the good stuff apart

So throw away the sneeze guard
And throw it all in the pot
You won’t know what you’ll get out
But some of it will be good, right?
