Ms. Kitty (National Poetry Writing Month 2023 #16)   Leave a comment

Nice and warm
On my lap,
Ms. Kitty
Takes a nap.
Soon enough,
Without fail,
I doze off
And nap as well.

Rubber Band (National Poetry Writing Month 2022 #16)   Leave a comment

You can stretch it out nice and long
But don't go until it snaps
This rubber band can take a lot
Before it develops cracks
Take time to relieve the tension
Lest that become its default state
This rubber band can take a lot
But it can't do much when it breaks

Essential (National Poetry Writing Month 2021 #16)   Leave a comment

I’m the stop gap, the bottleneck
The pack mule of this future tech
The domino you shouldn’t flick
The golden one, the crucial brick
The dam who holds the torrent back
The jar without a single crack
Or so I hope, but worst of all
No one knows I’m about to fall.

Wearing Out My Soul (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #16)   Leave a comment

Wearing out my soul as I wander the world
Every step laying it a little more bare
Scuffing it up, stripping more away
Caked in failures and regrets
But one learns and never forgets
The lessons earned with each day
Until one day, I become aware
I’m nuturing my soul as I wander the world

Brain Drain (National Poetry Writing Month 2019 #16)   Leave a comment

Suffering from brain drain
From going against the grain
But I can’t complain
Because I no longer have to explain

My mind gets to be blank
And if I have to be frank
I have stopped the crank
It’s this stillness my thoughts finally thank.

But I don’t get to cheer
The time to restart is here
And as it draws near
The stillness of my mind will disappear

A Moment (National Poetry Writing Month 2018 #16)   Leave a comment

The days go so slowly,
But the weeks go so fast.
The months count down endlessly
As the years blur past.
And yet I spend hours
Counting the minutes
Until the second I finally get
To spend a moment with you.

Easterly (National Poetry Writing Month 2017 #16)   Leave a comment

The easterly weather today
Is perfect for rabbits to play
And lay their eggs in the ground;
The science on that isn’t sound.
But they will keep bouncing along
To the distant sound of church song
Because rabbits are unawares
Of people and their church prayers

Stuck In A Skinner Box (National Poetry Writing Month #16)   1 comment

I’m still playing the game,
But it’s not for fun.
Keep repeating actions
One after one.
(I) don’t do it for love,
Just do it for pay.
It’s the same old grind
Day after day.

My life has become an addiction
I no longer want.
I’m stuck in a Skinner box;
I can’t break the lock

Working our jobs
Trade time for money
To trade it back in
For our bread and honey
Possessions are worthless.
Not worth the time.
Work is our sentence
Minutes the fine.

My life has become an addiction;
I want to be free.
I’m stuck in a Skinner box;
I can’t find the key.

Got to get out of this
Break from the norm.
Make like an anarchist,
Gather up the storm.
Flip the switch, light it up.
It’s time for a change.
My life won’t be perfect,
But I’ll make it strange.

My life has become an addiction,
But it’s not for me.
I’m stuck in a skinner box
It’s time to break free.

Something Fun (National Poetry Writing Month 2015 # 16)   Leave a comment

I want to do something!
No, not that dumb thing!
I want to do something fun.

I want to go play on a swing,
Or find a song to sing.
Something that I haven’t done.

Something exciting,
Something spirit igniting,
Something I haven’t done before.

The day is so inviting,
and this boredom so biting.
So I’m on my way out the door!

Galaxy (National Poetry Writing Month #16)   Leave a comment

Each of us is a galaxy contained
The world of the cosmos contained in our brain
The ability to look up and ponder the stars
Could only exist because of what we are

Supercomputers contained in a small space
Are the defining feature of our human race
Our memories and thoughts are the stars of our minds
A reflection of the complexity in our night sky.

A sky full of wonder, ourĀ  imagination stirs
We become starlight adventuruers.
And so we search, both in and out of our brains
To find out what our galaxy contains.
