I Think (National Poetry Writing Month 2024 #29)   Leave a comment

I'm sorry for the thing
I think I did to you
I don't know if I did it
But my brain says it's true
If I could go back in time
I think I'd think it through
And I probably wouldn't do it
At least, I hope that's true

Inertia (National Poetry Writing Month 2024 #13)   Leave a comment

A thought in motion
Stays in motion
A mistake at rest
Stays at rest
The thought spirals
Until it hits the mistake
A grand enough thought
Can move past a mistake
But a big enough mistake
Will stifle all progress

Future Mistakes (National Poetry Writing Month 2021 #11)   Leave a comment

Memories are warnings against our future mistakes
Oft unheeded guidance for us
Why don’t we listen?
Why not learn?
Ego?
Pride?
Joy?
Love?
Mercy?
Something else?
We may never know
Because we have trouble learning
And so, we make mistakes and more future memories

Mistakes   Leave a comment

I feel I am defined by my mistakes
More easily than by my successes.
By times when I could not rise to the stakes;
Times when I gave into my excesses.

I say this not because of self loathing,
Or due to obsessive ideation.
Nor, wearing pride like ill fitting clothing,
As an imposter venting frustration.

My mistakes are the crux of my story;
The arc starting the path to what’s in store.
At present, they seem ugly and gory.
In hindsight, they’re the path to being more.

In making mistakes, if you cannot learn,
Success is impossible to discern.
