Chameleon (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #20)   Leave a comment

Effusively I pick the color
I pick the shade you want for me
Brush the hue upon my person
Become the scene you want to see

And when you go, I dissipate
Diffusing into the background
And there I wait without a self
Until the next one comes around

Merchant of Woe (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #19)   Leave a comment

I am the merchant of woe
I bring my wares with me wherever I go
My goods are always to blame
Even when bought under a different name
The price is never a lot
At first, but soon it takes everything you’ve got
Pray you don’t see me around
With me, only pain and misery abound

When You Were Here With Me (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #18)   Leave a comment

Wrapped up in dreams of you
Of all the things I couldn’t do
Of all the things I meant to do
When you were here with me

I only have the memory
Wishes of how it’s supposed to be
Regrets of who I couldn’t be
When you were here with me

Glass Casket (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #17)   Leave a comment

A prisoner in my own glass casket
Allowed to observe, but not interact
Air inside continues to get thinner
As my thoughts coalesce and fade away
I start to drift throughout beams of sunlight
As the clock chimes and it’s hands start to slow
I breathe in deep; my eyes finally close
And I relax, having now found my peace

Wearing Out My Soul (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #16)   Leave a comment

Wearing out my soul as I wander the world
Every step laying it a little more bare
Scuffing it up, stripping more away
Caked in failures and regrets
But one learns and never forgets
The lessons earned with each day
Until one day, I become aware
I’m nuturing my soul as I wander the world

Purpose (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #15)   Leave a comment

Here, tonight, I sit in soliloquy
Pondering the purpose of life, of man
The nature of finding his destiny
The folly of failing to make his plan
Showing his virtue in chasing vices
Showing true honesty while he’s alone
Losing himself in other’s devices
Showing his passion, nose to the grindstone
Taking life’s road past the ruin, the fame
Or standing aside while others go past
Owning his failure, or passing the blame
Breathing each breath as if it were his last
To list out a man, I’ve only begun
But to understand, I’ll never be done

How can I understand something I know
I cannot ever truly understand
For I’m one crystal in a sea of snow
But one single grain in a hill of sand
The infinitesimal blinds my sight
As I stare at the unknown, unblinking
The deluge of data fills me with fright
The cognitive burden stops my thinking
Why must I care about this fantasy!?
Why does this fire keep burning my brain!?
Why does my suffering bring ecstasy!?
Is this sanity, or ramblings insane?
I must keep on searching to find my truth
I’ll obsess a lifetime, starting in youth

The King of Nothing (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #14)   Leave a comment

The king of nothing stares out
At the land of his ever growing ego.
He stands on his mountain to shout,
“I am the king of wherever I go!”

The people all pointed and jeered
At their “monarch’s” obvious delusion.
For the dynasty he thought was revered
Was all just his own sad illusion.

Glances (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #13)   Leave a comment

In shadows and in-between glances
I see my true self hidden behind an ornate mask

Of expectations and of pressures
Crafted, and then grafted, onto me against my will

A rictus smile hides the blessures
A great pretender which proves itself up to the task

I hold my breath, I wait for chances
To pull back the mask, to let myself finally spill

A Bit Too Cold (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #12)   Leave a comment

Life has grown a bit too cold
As every moment passes by.
Despite the warmth I try to hold,
Life has grown a bit too cold.
Love is worth it’s weight in gold,
And I’m a beggar asking why
Life has grown a bit too cold
As every moment passes by?

Drawn from dreams (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #11)   Leave a comment

As if drawn from dreams
My sudden inspiration
Fades just as quickly
