True Self (National Poetry Writing Month 2020 #22)   Leave a comment

Often, the people you see everyday
Aren’t really the people you know
Because you only hear the things they say
Only see the things that they choose to show

You see the outfit they wear on parade
The colors and choices they show outside
But what we display in our masquerade
Is just the shield we are using to hide

Our true selves are vulnerable to harms
Brought on by others who don’t understand
We wish to be welcomed with open arms
Instead we are slapped by an outstretched hand

And so our true self stays locked in our mind
Well hidden, only for ourselves to find
